Today I’m wearing red, and not just because it complements my look.
The American Heart Association’s Wear Red for Women Day is today, and being one of those with a vested interest in the AHA and its noble work, I donned a red sweatshirt over my black jeans on this frigid winter morn.
I’m not one to pound my chest for causes. There are countless causes that are all well intentioned and are aimed at improving lives. But as a card-carrying cardiac kid, I have to give a shout out on this particular occasion.
I’m going out on a limb here, but I’ll bet that heart health doesn’t creep into your consciousness on a daily basis. Fortunately, or unfortunately, it does for this guy. Heart conditions have a way of messing with your head and your body. I guess that’s true for anyone dealing with a chronic situation. What one discounts, another cherishes. Funny how things are.
Never take your heart – or any life-sustaining organ – for granted. It’s the only heart you’ll have – I hope – so make it last as long as you can. Walk, run, work out, eat well, rest, de-stress…all of these pursuits will improve your cardiovascular health and your mental health.
Life’s too short, so take care of yourself, and think about wearing red more often. I’d like us all to stick around a while and have some fun!
